Description ds 2015-09-15 23:44:40 UTC
I have OpenOffice default to saving files as .doc
When I try to open them in MS Word 2013, the last line of text does not appear, though it isn't "gone," either: if I Select All and copy/paste to a new document, and then press the backspace key after the last, invisible line, the text reappears.
Is this a known bug? Is there something I should be doing differently?

Comment 2 mbasha2013 2015-09-22 22:39:08 UTC
That’s my configuration
1.	OS: Windows 8.1 (64-bit, x64-based processor)
2.	OpenOffice version: 4.2.0 (32 bit)
3.	Word version: 2013 (32 bit)
I did the following to successfully replicate the bug:
1.	I typed two lines of text (see image: Replication 1.)
2.	I saved the file in a .doc format (Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP.) (A dialog box popped up after saving, telling me I could lose content or formatting for saving the file in a in a non-.odt format. I selected “Keep current [.doc] format.”)
3.	I closed Writer and opened the newly-saved file using Word.
4.	The failure behaved differently depending on the view mode I selected:
a.	Editing-enabled view: Failure scenario (A) is triggered.
b.	Protected/Read-only view: Failure scenario (B) is triggered
Failure:
A.	The last line of text that was visible in Writer’s editor is not visible and cannot be highlighted when opened in Word (see screenshot: Failure A and compare to screenshot: Replication 1)
B.	The quantity of words that become no longer visible before indicating the document’s end seems to vary depending on the window’s width (see screenshots: Failure B1 through Failure Before B4)
Some notes:
•	The bug is replicable on .doc files if they’re Windows 97/2000/XP. It is not replicable on Windows 95 or Windows 6.0 .doc files.
•	The bug is still replicable if the text used for (1) was copied from a Word file instead of being generated by Writer.
•	No relevant reports were found.

I can confirm that I was able to reproduce the bug.
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit
OpenOffice 4.1 and 4.2
MS Word 2013 32-bit
Steps I took:
1. Open Writer
2. Enter 'This is a test sentence.'
3. Hit enter
4. Enter 'This is another test sentence.'
5. Save the file as a .doc Windows 97/2003
6. Navigate to the file's location
7. Right click on it and select Open with MS Word 2013
8. When it opens in OOo, notice the last line is gone

I have NOT been able to reproduce this bug by coping text from a Word file. I tested this several times using different amounts of text, and never saw the bug.

I did some subsequent tests in an effort to help troubleshoot.

- Tested short paragraph, i.e. two lines - Reproducible
- Tested long paragraphs, i.e. whole page - Reproducible
- Tested different punctuation at the end of sentence, had no affect - Reproducible
- Tested with formatting, i.e. bullets and heading 1, had no affect - reproducible
- Tested protected vs. non-Protected view in Word, had no affect - Reproducible
- Tested with different sized text, 12 for the steps described above. Then 22, then 60. Had no affect - Reproducible
- Tested with different fonts, i.e Tunga and Kristen ITC, had no affect - reproducible.

Comment 10 Francis Darius 2016-02-17 02:22:50 UTC
I was able to reproduce this bug with the following configuration:
•	Windows 10 PC
•	OpenOffice Writer version 4.1.2
•	Microsoft Word 2016 32-bit
The following steps successfully reproduced the bug:
1.	Opened OO Writer
2.	Typed two sentences on separate lines e.g. (1) “I am using this sentence as a test.” (hit enter) and (2) “This is another sentence for testing; the one that usually disappears.”
3.	Saved the file as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)
4.	Close OpenOffice Writer
5.	Launch Microsoft Word 2016
6.	Open the saved file from step 3
7.	When opened, the second line should not be visible.
I tried a few variations on the steps mentioned above which also reproduced the bug.
1.	I tried using only one sentence in place of two, following the rest of steps above. When this was done, there were no words visible in Microsoft Word 2016. This showed the illusion that nothing was saved in OpenOffice Writer. I was a bit curious so I pressed (CTRL + A) in MS Word 2016 to copy everything on the page (even if no words were visible) to make sure that the words were not hiding, then I pasted in a new Document in MS Word 2016. Still, nothing was seen pasted.
2.	Another variation was using the formats MS Word 95 (.doc) and MS Word 6.0 (.doc). In this case the both sentences are visible, however, it opens in protected view

I can reproduce this, and I can make it go away.

If you do not end the paragraph that is the last line by hitting enter, Word will not recognize it.

However, if you open the .doc back in AOO 4.1.2, the line is there (and the cursor is still at the end of that line).

Click enter and then save as a .doc document file again. Word will open it just fine.

 - - - - - - -

Just to see if I could narrow farther, I did the reverse. Made a .doc in Word 2016 that had no Enter after the last line.

It reopened just fine in Word 2016.

It opened just fine in AOO 4.1.2. But if I saved it back out from AOO 4.1.2 I got a .doc with the problem.

This seems to be an output conversion problem. There is an easy workaround for those who have documents that they are frustrated over.

Behavior is confirmed.
