Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 4508
Split screen in word processor would be a nice addition
Last modified: 2011-07-24 22:31:26 UTC
As far as I can see it is not possible to split the screen so that two parts of the same document are worked on at the same time. This would be a nice additional feature. Also, I know there is a word count in the stats tab of properties. However, this does not allow for counting the number of words in a section. It would be a useful addition if this was added and available, with the general count option, in the Tools menu. Preferred method would be one count words option that would count words in selected text, if text has been selected.
This is two enhancments in one issue. This won't work. Please have a look at http://www.openoffice.org/bugs/bug_writing_guidelines.html and decide wich one to drop (feel free to write a new issue for that one) Thank you.
This is an additional improvement, but I am not in a position to make the change.
About splitting the screen: Via menu bar "Window-New window" opens another window of the current file. -> Worksforme. About the word count thingie: Feel free to simply copy your description into a new issue.
As mentioned on the qa dev list on March 5th I will close all resolved <wontfix/duplicate/worksforme/invalid> issues. Please see this posting for details. First step in IssueZilla is unfortunately to set them to verified.

Changed summary for the RFE this Issue has been closed for. As to the word count option on selected text see Issue 4568 for a workaround.
Please re-open this issue, as it is still unresolved. The person that closed it must not have understood what the request was. See Issue 19291 for a better explanation. I recommend marking this a duplicate of that one and leaving that one open, since this issue wasn't written according to the proper guidelines.
Sba: I don't exactly like to repeat myself. It is possible: Via menu "Window - New window" opens another window of the current document. -> set to Worksforme. Please write another ENHANCEMENT issue if you think that clicking "Window - New window" is too complicated to get another document view. The open-close-ping pong makes the issues longer and longer and longer thus eating more and more and more time when only READING the issues. Please leave this one closed now.
This bug is not about getting a second document view. Please read the subject, it reads "Split screen ...". Please reopen the Bug or close the bug as fontfix.

pinkernell doesn't understand what we're asking for. It is helpful to be able to open the same document in another window, but we have to keep switching back and forth to see what we want. We can then shrink both windows so we have the effect of a split screen, but that is a clumsy workaround. What we're asking for is a split screen so we see different parts of the same document or two different documents on the same window -- not a different window. I guess pinkernell has never seen a split screen. There's considerable difference between two windows and a single window split to show two different views or even two documents in a single window. The ease of use between the two is enormously different. I would love to see a split screen if pinkernell would simply reopen this as a request for enhancement. I'm going to try to reopen the issue, but if it doesn't work, I'll file a new issue on this.
RBE, I am afraid you're addressing the wrong man here. I am fully aware of the difference between split screen and having the same doc opened in two windows. And I fully agree with you in that handling the latter is clumsy. What I have been doing is to close Issues which are obvious duplicates of this so that the discussion on whether to implement such a feature or not can be focussed within one Issue, which is this. The fact that this Issue was or is or will be closed (not by me!) doesn't mean that discussion can't continue. In fact it should.
Sorry if I misattributed or misunderstood the comments, pinkernell. Which issue remains that would deal with the split screen request?
SBA: I reopened issue 4508 in order to close THIS one as duplicate. Reason: Clear and short description there, confusion and "too-much-junk-to-read" in here. *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 19291 ***
SBA: Closed.
I see that this issue is closed. What can I do to reopen it, so that I can vote? The window --> new window alternative is quite unpractical if one's used to the Word-principle of splitting the screen.
Hi, I think the "slide my window horizontally" feature is really a must have. It's not only a "MS word-like" feature. For people like me who edit procedures and test reports, with traceability matrix, who want to check the content of a table at the end of the document with the rest of the document, it's very easy with MS Word, but such a pain with oOo. I read that this feature is claimed for years. I really don't see the reason why not implementing it now. oOo shall propose "at least" what other processors do, and achieve better. Otherwise, what's the point? Sincerly yours. yuehan
I'm writing my masters thesis right now and my paper is about 130 pages long. I am writing the conclusion and need to reference other parts of my paper. This would be a lot easier if I could split the window. It seems like such a useful feature for documents of this length. I'm considering buying Word 2010 because it has a few useful features that OpenOffice lacks. Please add this feature to OO!!!
